“He will again have compassion on us; he will tread our iniquities underfoot. You will cast all our sins into the depths of the sea.” Micah 7:19
This is such a beautiful verse that communicates incredible faith in the loving, faithful heart of God. To understand this verse in its depth, we must understand that it was written in the context of a warning to God’s people that He is about to send them away into captivity in Babylon because of their sin. But despite that fact, the book is hope-filled! Even though the people of Judah are about to be disciplined because they have continued in their sin, Micah intersperses his entire book with reminders that God is not done with the people of Israel. The reason for that hope that He will not abandon them forever is that God’s people can always trust that after they “bear the indignation of the Lord” they can be certain that He will return to “plead their cause” and bring them “out into the light”. (Micah 7:9).
Sometimes our persistence in sin and immaturity necessitates that God bring disciplinary action into our lives. When that happens, may we know that He disciplines us for our good. May we respond by seeking to grow in our submission and obedience to Him. May we trust that “He will again have compassion on us,” because His compassion certainly does persist.
