God gave us a great gift when He made us mothers. However, it is a gift that came with much responsibility and if we are not careful, that responsibility can drain us and cause us to lose sight of the gift. So, what do we do when negativity knocks at the door? You know, those doubts about the best way to do something, the fear of the things we are getting wrong or having to leave undone, the weariness either physically or emotionally because of the hugeness of the task before us and so on?
If we are not on our guard, it is a perfect recipe for the Devil to step in and tell us all kinds of lies that can debilitate us as Moms. However, God has given us a huge weapon against these things. All we have to do is choose to pick it up and wield it. The resource is there, and it is completely sufficient for our every need, but if left on the ground unused, we will be totally defenseless. So, what is this weapon?
It is God’s promises claimed in prayer. I’m sure some of you – eager to hear a fix – were disappointed at this answer. It can be seen as the cliché answer, I know. Too “easy” and seemingly ineffective because it is totally out of our hands. But it is true. God has given us a wealth of promises (that He is completely good for) if we will claim them and walk in them. For example, God said He gives wisdom to those who ask for it. So when I am in doubt about a decision to make with my child and I pray that God gives me wisdom to lead, then, I can walk confidently forward knowing that He is doing just that.
However, here’s the problem. We can all too easily speak the promise but then walk forward as though it had no power or effect. This is where we must purposefully choose. If we continue to wonder and doubt we will feel fear and sadness, uncertainty and guilt but if we trust His promise we can walk forward in confidence and victory, joy and peace. It is a choice not a feeling.
God didn’t command we get it all right, He knew we wouldn’t. He commanded we turn to Him, seek His help and lean on His power…and then He said to trust Him. He always gives us everything we need for that which He calls us to. He wants us to succeed at this calling even more than we do. So, go forward in confidence. Start searching out His precious promises and then stand on them.
