I need to remember my place. Do you remember yours? Sometimes I forget my place, and I end up saying things that are out of line. Sometimes I forget my place, and I end up leaving things unsaid that are mine to say. I imagine that some of you have forgotten your place as well. It seems to be pretty normal about now.
Sometimes I notice the colors God placed in the sunset that day, and I don’t say anything to anybody. Sometimes I notice the cool breeze or some words of encouragement that refresh me, and I don’t shout a loud “thank you” to the heavens. Sometimes I get frustrated with these other humans I share this planet with, and I complain in my spirit about why they are the way they are. Sometimes I forget my place.
I forget that it’s my place to shout as loudly as the heavens do that I can see the glory of God all around me! I forget that it’s my place to fill the courts of heaven with mountains of gratitude for the gifts He sends my way constantly. I forget that it’s my place to be in awe of the One who created these thinking, feeling, loving, creating conglomerations of cells that we call humans. There is no shortage of beauty, majesty, wisdom, and sheer awesomeness for us to notice and make note of.
It’s a sad commentary on our culture that, when we make note of these kinds of things, it can sound “cheesy” to us and others. Let’s become so accustomed to proclaiming His glory, beauty, and thanks that it no longer sounds odd on our own lips or to our ears. Let’s make a new normal. This is our place. This is our role.
There’s a song on Christian radio right now that expresses this sentiment; it’s called “So Will I”. Here are some of the highlights of the song:
And as You speak
A hundred billion galaxies are born
In the vapor of Your breath the planets form
If the stars were made to worship so will I …
And as You speak
A hundred billion creatures catch Your breath
Evolving in pursuit of what You said
If it all reveals Your nature so will I …
And as You speak
A hundred billion failures disappear
Where You lost Your life so I could find it here
If You left the grave behind You so will I …
There is a chorus of praise continually echoing throughout this creation. We each have a place in that chorus. Let us take our place joyfully … and vocally.
