What motivates us to obey? What do we hope is the end product of our adherence to the teaching of Jesus?
If we are primarily concerned with avoiding punishment, then there is a deeper, more impacting motivation waiting to be grasped. We can be inspired by the abundant life that Jesus shows us, the goodness of His character, and the assurance of belonging to Him as He does His work within us. As His disciples, we can be inspired to be like Him. It is this kind of inspiration that can provide a more complete, life-giving motivation than fear of punishment alone.
